How to Tell if You Need New Brakes

While we all know properly functioning brakes are important for safety, not everyone knows when they need to replace them. Find out what to look for and when you should bring in your vehicle for an inspection and brake change.

Warning Signs

Some warnings signs, like a loud screeching noise while braking, can be confusing. If you hear that noise after the brakes have gotten wet, that can be a normal noise made by a thin layer of rust being removed during the braking process. If the noise persists or starts when the weather has been dry, you may need new brakes. Other warning signs you need new brakes to include:

  • Reduced responsiveness
  • Pedal sinks to the floor
  • Vehicle pulls to one side when braking
  • Grinding noise
  • Pedal vibrates
  • Brake pads less than ¼ inch in thickness

If you have any concerns about the condition of your brakes, make an appointment with an experienced technician to avoid a collision or more costly repairs down the line.
